Sporting Style Inspirations

by Rebecca Ray on May 18, 2012

Do you ever wonder where our Rebecca Ray Designs style inspirations come from?  Just ask my husband and my daughter who have to put up with me yelling “Stop the Car!” so that I can take photographs of houses, antiques, decorative arts and all things beautiful.  Often it is a color combination that I have never thought about or a pairing of things in nature that starts me thinking.

I am a confirmed tag sale, yard sale, estate sale, auction and antiques show junkie; my dream day is to spend it all by myself walking an antique show and hunting for the obscure.  I always look under everyone’s tables and go through the boxes that no one ever bothers to open – that is where you find the real treasures. Believe it or not, it is really hard work! While I’m on the hunt I’m in a zone and lost in my own thoughts about what I am finding.  I often go in having no idea what I’m going to buy. I like the hunt to be organic and I have to LOVE what I buy ; I don’t care if it is “in” or “out”,  it has to please my eye. This is where our authenticity and original ideas come from.

I have a gorgeous pair of plaster sconces in our powder room that are verdigris green with baskets and flowers that have moved from house to house with us.  I found them in a wet cardboard box under an auction table buried under much lesser value light fixtures.  To my great relief no one else noticed them all the way up to the auction and I snagged them – of course I had to live with the fact that everyone was wondering what on earth I was so excited about as I walked up that auction aisle and grabbed my box!

Here are some things that caught my eye while I was walking a show – It gives you a glimpse of things that catch my eye.  Enjoy!

A lovely composition - love the pairing of the grey silk with the raw linen and I adore this size settee - so versatile and right sized. We have one in our office like this!

A possible new color combination for a Rebecca Ray handbag... maybe!

An English Setter - actually a Tri Color English Setter with a black eye mask - my absolute favorite!!! Good thing I have the real lives ones at home or this would have been coming home with me!

A plaque with a marvelous gilded color around it. Love the detail of the braiding, the laurel leaves and oak leaves.

I love all things plaster, especially animals - I have quite a collection going. I loved this guy!

Beautiful stripe details - see the woven texture?

Fun assorted sporting art...

A beautiful shape and carving of a horse with terrific patina.

My Mother’s Day Gift!

by Rebecca Ray on May 11, 2012

Every year for Mother’s Day, my husband Derek and our daughter Lizzie hitch up Licorice’s horse trailer and we go out to our favorite nursery. I get to pick out all of the flowers to fill my planters, window boxes and hanging flowers. I’m still waiting for the magical elf to come and plant them for me, but I haven’t seen him yet.  So instead, I spent all last Saturday planting. This weekend, for Mother’s Day, everyone gets to enjoy the rewards of all of the efforts.  The photos I am sharing today are from our back patio, where most of the mature plantings have been “borrowed” from neighbors and family. It is so fun to look at those perennials ever year, remember where they came from, and marvel at how big they’ve gotten over the years.

This year, I selected hot pinks (just like our hot pink handbag and accessory pieces) and vivid limes accented by whites and purples. I used lots of inexpensive, fast growing plants like geraniums, petunias, and varieties of potato vine.

I love using “found” containers; sometimes I paint them in my selected color of the season.  I painted our old cedar bench in lime green this year as well.

As far as I’m concerned, the more rough and tumble an object is, the better the patina. Below is Lizzie’s woodlands playhouse surrounded by beautiful rhododendron.

The swirled glass gazing ball is a hand blown glass orb from a little glass blowing studio in East Jordan, Michigan.

So I hope you enjoy my garden.  As the window boxes start to overflow, we’ll take more pictures for you!  Happy Mother’s Day!

Welcome to My Home and My Family’s Haven

by Rebecca Ray on May 4, 2012

Hello! Our Rebecca Ray fans have been asking for our blog to feature more personal photos and adventures of the Rebecca Ray Team.  I thought I’d start with my house and share a sneak peek with you!!  We have been in our home almost 10 years now and have remodeled and redecorated from top to bottom.   A project like that literally takes ten years!  All along the way, my husband, Derek and I have collected our favorite animal and sporting art.  As we travel, I try to almost exclusively look for just “animal” related objects and art that catch my eye – sometimes they come from estate sales, antique shows, stops along the way, and every once and a while, a dumpster dive!  Many of these antique pieces become the inspiration for new products we develop for you.   Keep checking the blog as when I find more wonderful things, I’ll share them with you.  Hopefully this gives you more insight into the world of Rebecca Ray Designs and our lifestyle.

Here is our front foyer/entry way.  We love our federal stars going up the steps!  The white pointing setter on the pine chest is from an estate of another long time English Setter breeder.  I fought hard for it in an auction and carried it home from a dog show on my lap!

This is our kitchen – when we moved in the island we worried it was too big – but now I do everything there and we love it!!  I have designed handbags there and laid out the Rebecca Ray Catalog on it before.  The horse in an antique paper mache mold.

This is our family room – I love collecting animal faces, often in chalkware or bronze.  The Hackney Pony sign on the left I found under a vendor’s table at Portobello in London and much to Derek’s dismay, I hand carried it through the streets of London (where, I might add, I could have sold it a few more times!)

This is my collection of miniature animals – most of them chalk, paper mache, lead or hand carved.  I’ve been collecting them since I was in college.  The top farm barn and animals were my 40th birthday present to myself!  The corner cabinet is Cherry, Federal about 1840 and the wallpaper was original to it when I bought it at auction.

More of our family room – the pencil drawing over the fireplace is a very well-known show dog of mine, Bradley.  My husband gave me this drawing for an anniversary and it is one of my favorite gifts from him.  Even though we lost Bradley at 14 a few years ago, this picture captures him perfectly and reminds me of him every day.

This is actually my favorite room in the whole house.  The paper depicts English Setters hunting and I’ve collected all of the oils and watercolors from all over.  The two steeple chasing prints are French and my Mom snagged them one summer at a house sale around the corner from us.

Here is the living room.  The couches were $25 garage sale frames that I upholstered in vintage Scalamandre napoleonic bee fabric.  The dapple gray horse in the corner in a Victorian training pony, so children could learn how to ride.  He is decked out in real tack, including a antique children’s side saddle. The horse over the fireplace came from a flea market in France.  Derek and I were first married and scraped our pennies together to buy him.  Then the airlines decided his tail was a potential weapon and they didn’t want me to carry him on board.  An hour and many tears later, he was on his way with us, tucked in 2 overhead bins!

The bedroom is our retreat!  The french figural lamps were a garage sale find and the snowflake quilt is applique. The barn picture over the fireplace is one of my best garage sale finds – the artist is a noted Cleveland Impressionist and the colors are perfect for the room.

Moo!  This is my cow – at the annual holiday event, once the wine is flowing, he inevitably ends up with a Santa hat on him – everyone teases me about him, but I love him!  We created the stone fireplace behind the range out of left over stone from our fireplace projects.  Hope that you have enjoyed the tour!  More next time!

With St Patrick’s Day around the corner, what better time to celebrate a bit of green!  In the Spring, when the new grass is popping up and the trees are leafing out I can’t help but think there’s nothing more lovely than green.  Of course at Rebecca Ray, we love green in all it’s moods and shades.  Some of our fav accessories are in deep, stackable shades that look extraordinary paired with brights and neons.  Above, our Bit Bracelet in Brass and Green looks gorgeous.   Here are some more ideas to put you in the mood for green goodness.
